KENT - THE GATEWAY AND GARDEN OF ENGLAND

At its nearest point, Kent is just 22 miles from France.  This, plus its long coastline and closeness to London has shaped the country's history, countryside, architecture, industry, agriculture and customs.  In war, it has been Britain's first line of defence; in peace, it has been a highway for monarchs, pilgrims, trade and ideas.  This lecture sets out how poets, authors and artists have recorded this in literature and in the decorative arts.
